Life at Dancing RabbitThis is a featured page

Dancing Rabbit ecovillage is an intentional community located in Northeast Missouri. This community of 40 people is dedicated to living in a sustainable fashion and to provide outreach for others to learn about living a sustainable, ecologically friendly lifestyle. The community is located in a rural area and residents commit to not having a personal vehicle on the property. Three vehicles are shared to meet the needs of the community. The homes here are made from straw, cob, earth, or salvaged building materials. All of the buildings are off the grid; most electricity is provided by solar panels and there is one wind turbine located on the property. Food co ops provide meals at a low cost to residents while the cooking rotation means preparing a meal roughly once every two weeks. Constructed wetland systems process the gray water from the buildings, while all human waste is composted in a humanure system.

Dancing Rabbit Common House
The common house at dancing rabbit has an office, library, kids room, community kitchen, and great room for dining and activities. The common house also provides access to a washing machine and two community showers.

ChartThe power level for the community house is check daily and given a code to let residents know how much power consumption is appropriate. The power levels from greatest to least are Green, Yellow, Orange, Red, and Black. At each power level there are limitations on devices that can be used.

OuthouseSawdust

Sawdust toilets are used for human waste at dancing rabbit. After each use, a can of sawdust is added to the bucket for sanitary reasons and to supplement the composting mixture.

BucketsCompost bin

A lid is attached to the buckets from the sawdust toilets when they are full. They are kept in a central storage area until there are enough buckets to start a compost pile. The waste is composted for around a year and then used for fertilizing fruit trees or other applications.

PondShower

Dancing Rabbit also has a swimming pond and solar showers for community use.

Tent

Camping is standard for interns at Dancing Rabbit. Tent platforms help dramatically by preventing ground water from seeping into the tent. Since I will be staying here for 3 1/2 months, I've set up a large tarp to provide extra protection from rainfall and to provide a canopy around the tent.

Solar Power

During my stay at Dancing Rabbit I'll be using a solar battery charger to run my digital camera, and using power at the community house to run my laptop. I'll be running off of 100% renewable energy.
